    Flatbed Trailers 101

The proper way to use a trailer depends on the type of trailer you have. Here at Lewis Trailers, we want to make sure you know the ins and outs of trailer ownership so that you can best utilize this investment. One of the most common types of trailers is the flatbed trailer.

Flatbed trailers are characterized by their lack of siding or any type of enclosure. They are ideal for transporting large, bulkier materials that don’t typically fit within the confines of an enclosed trailer. These materials include vehicles, heavy machinery, and awkwardly shaped raw materials being taken to a construction site or processing facility. Loading and unloading these materials are easier with a flatbed trailer for both manual loading as well as loading from a machine.

Because of the lack of enclosure, properly strapping down and securing cargo is of the utmost importance when working with flatbed trailers. Failing to keep cargo and materials secure is a major safety risk and can result in damages to your surroundings as well as serious injuries. Fortunately, securing cargo is fairly easy with a flatbed trailer; the lack of siding makes for easy maneuvering around the trailer to approach strapping down cargo from all angles.

Even among flatbed trailers there is variability. For example, different connection options, including gooseneck trailer connections, are available for use on different towing vehicles. We strive to have an inclusive inventory with as many options as possible, so if you’re on the hunt for a trailer, be it flatbed or enclosed, be sure to check out what we have in stock.
